How Acupuncture May Help Manage Common GLP-1 Medication Side Effects While Supporting Your Overall Well-Being

GLP-1 medications have transformed the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, helping millions of people achieve healthier weight loss and better metabolic control.

If GLP-1 medications are helping you, we’re happy for you. Our goal is not to replace a treatment that is working. Our goal is to help you stay comfortable, balanced, and healthy throughout your journey.

At Eastern Medicine Center, we believe patients do not have to choose between modern medicine and traditional medicine.

By bringing Eastern and Western medicine together, patients may benefit from the best of both worlds.

Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years to support the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Today, many patients choose acupuncture as a complementary therapy to help manage common discomforts that may occur during GLP-1 treatment while supporting overall wellness.

Looking Beyond Weight Loss

Weight loss is only one part of better health.

To feel your best during treatment, it is equally important to support:

  • Healthy digestion
  • Comfortable bowel function
  • Stable energy
  • Quality sleep
  • Emotional well-being
  • Physical activity
  • Healthy muscle maintenance

This is where acupuncture may provide valuable complementary support.

1. Nausea and Stomach Discomfort

Nausea is among the most commonly reported side effects of GLP-1 medications, particularly during the early weeks of treatment or after dose increases.

Acupuncture has traditionally been used to help regulate stomach function and reduce digestive discomfort. Depending on each patient’s presentation, treatment may include points that support normal digestive regulation, including PC6 (Neiguan), ST36 (Zusanli), and CV12 (Zhongwan).

Auricular acupuncture may also be incorporated. In our clinical experience, points such as the Endocrine point may be considered as part of an individualized treatment plan.

Treatment is always customized according to each patient’s symptoms and overall Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pattern.

2. Constipation and Slower Digestion

GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying as part of their therapeutic effect. In some individuals, this may also contribute to slower bowel movements.

From a TCM perspective, many patients with constipation may present with patterns involving Qi deficiency and reduced digestive motility, although individual pattern differentiation remains essential.

Acupuncture aims to encourage normal gastrointestinal movement and support healthy digestive function. Depending on the patient’s condition, treatment may include points such as ST25 (Tianshu), ST37 (Shangjuxu), SJ6 (Zhigou), as well as ST28 (Shuidao) and ST29 (Guilai) when clinically appropriate.

Lifestyle measures—including adequate hydration, appropriate dietary fiber, regular movement, and sufficient protein intake—remain important components of care.

3. Fatigue, Physical Activity, and Muscle Function

Successful weight loss depends not only on losing fat, but also on maintaining strength and staying physically active.

Some individuals experience fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, or decreased motivation during treatment.

Acupuncture may help support energy regulation, improve overall well-being, and make it easier to maintain regular physical activity.

For selected patients, electroacupuncture may also be incorporated. Electroacupuncture has long been used in rehabilitation medicine to promote neuromuscular activation and support muscle function. When combined with resistance exercise, adequate protein intake, and appropriate nutritional support, it may help patients maintain functional strength throughout their weight-loss journey.

4. Stress, Sleep, and Emotional Well-Being

Weight loss involves more than physical changes.

Many individuals continue to experience stress, anxiety, emotional eating habits, or poor sleep even after their appetite improves.

Acupuncture has traditionally been used to promote relaxation and support healthy sleep. Depending on the patient’s needs, treatment may include points such as Yintang, GV20 (Baihui), and calming point combinations selected according to TCM pattern differentiation.

Auricular acupuncture may also include points such as Shenmen and Heart as part of an individualized treatment plan.

Supporting emotional well-being may help patients build healthier long-term habits that extend beyond weight loss alone.

An Integrative Approach to Better Health

At Eastern Medicine Center, our goal is not simply to help patients lose weight.

Our goal is to help patients feel healthier, stronger, and more comfortable throughout every stage of their wellness journey.

Acupuncture is not intended to replace prescribed GLP-1 medications. Rather, it may serve as a valuable complementary therapy that supports digestive health, physical activity, emotional well-being, and long-term lifestyle success.

When appropriate, acupuncture may also be combined with individualized Chinese herbal medicine, nutritional guidance, and coordinated medical care to provide truly integrative treatment.

The best healthcare doesn’t ask you to choose between Eastern and Western medicine. It brings together the strengths of both—for the benefit of every patient.
